Yaprak Akinci

Turkish contemporary artist Yaprak Akinci was born in Istanbul (1984) and graduated from the prestigious Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University with a degree in graphic design. Akinci explores her creative pathway through a multitude of techniques, ranging from painting, drawing, photography and cinema, to engraving.

In 2010, Akinci moved to Rome and completed a Master’s Degree in Graphic Art at the Accademia delle Belle Arti, where painting became the focus of her artistic output. Her work is profoundly affected by the frantic architectural transformation and unfettered construction that she has observed over many years. With the confines of the city relentlessly pushed back, her paintings suggest the inevitability of barren post-industrial landscapes, where consumption has given way to degeneration and, ultimately, extinction. Her dark interpretation of colour and use of intangible forms and structures create a sense of heightened tension but also one of potent silence.

In 2012, Akinci received the ‘Arte Genera Arte’ prize at the fourth edition of the Premio Terna. Furthermore, Akinci was a finalist of the Premio Pittura Inail and the Premio Fibrenus in 2013, as well as a finalist in the UbqArt Award in 2015. Following this, Akinci’s works have been selected for exhibition in numerous shows in Istanbul, Rome, London and Carrara.

Akinci’s extraordinary body of artwork demonstrates an evolving and flourishing artistic practice. She manifests endless talent through her broad range of aesthetic elements and study of shape and reflection. Akinci vividly conveys her deeper imaginative intentions embodying contrasting creative avenues, from provocative photographs and refined engravings to striking installations and paintings.

Intensely influenced by industrial areas, Akinci immortalises particular perspectives of obscure crude oil plants, obsolete workshops, excavations, forgotten railway lines and abandoned buildings, investigating the unfathomable souls of these deserted modern ruins.
